Ping, ping, and another ping from another messenger. While social tools are meant to connect us more, interfacing with them can drain resources like time and attention. How can we design connectedness and a sense of belonging with an optimal amount of effort and engagement? While there is no one-fit-all solution, each participant will allocate her time to proactively shape how she wants to relate with people. For instance, a silly prototype like a “whatsapp balloon that flies to my girlfriend” can allow for more creativity and lead to your best solution. From serious to silly and back again to serious solutions can work!

At the end of the day, you are accountable for all your choices and actions. A shift towards a mindful presence in the moment - whether at home or work or in between - is a good start. It can lead to more satisfaction at the end of the day. Participants will explore playfully the spectrum of mindful and mindless experiences, apply proven “narrative therapy” techniques and be of help for their co-learners. For instance, describing a decision process from a third person perspective will expand your mind.

Standing in good health is not self-understood, isn’t it? Especially when you work hard, self-care is a top priority. Participants will break down their desired health routine into manageable steps. It is step-by-step “chaining” of behavior to compose a smooth performance - just like circus artists do. Participants will literally walk a rope - a representation of a future timeline with health challenges to their left and right. How can you maintain a daily meditation practice when work demands frequent travel? Planning for multiple scenarios is part of that good plan.

The same tools (think email, messenger, cloud services) that make work easy, sometimes make life after work harder. In this 2 hour workshop, participants will examine their unique work and life demands and needs. Then, by applying 1-2 exercises from Pixel Story Studio’s systemic design thinking tool box, participants will prepare and try out the changes they seek. For example, a journey map of a device-free evening starting at 8pm is in theory a good idea, yet role playing the routine with other participants who witness it, truly consolidates change.

The workshop series “Design Your Life for X” is an innovative combination of design thinking with systemic therapy. It applies creative problem solving guided by design thinking principles - empathy, bias to act, experimentation, playfulness - on cognitive, emotional and behavioral issues of daily life.

And what does design thinking feel like? Like a banana. Read more here in Tim Brown’s original post from 2008 at the beginning of this approach.
Growing and changing as a family comes with its own challenges. Each family member has unique physical, psychological and social needs. One parent may be a night owl while the other is an early bird. One child needs quiet while the other thrives on social stimulation. All need a certain level of processing busy days and positive reflection. In the end, each day only affords us with 24 hours of time - a fixed factor and good constraint to massage. Our hopes to sync as a family do face the harsh reality of ragged rhythms.
The systemic design thinking approach offers a unique angle on setting up family life for more well-being. It is a playful and curious method to view family growth and changes as a possible joint activity.
Pixel Story Studio stands for sustained experience with working with families to improve mental health, mindful well-being and #GSD (getting shit done). In this small-sized workshop, the focus will be on narrative therapy techniques and role play.
The narrative therapy approach uses storytelling to attain desired outcomes. How can a parent speak differently about daily challenges so that he or she feels in control and inspired to make necessary changes? This approach also uses letter-writing and awarding of prizes as a tool to empower a person. Imagine each day in a family ending with a round out gratitude for one another?
Being in a group allows for a unique type of learning: social learning and imitation. Each participant is a resource for the other group members. We will prepare short role plays of selected challenges to experience another member’s point of view and then collect feedback on the role play for learning. After that, each participant will plan concrete changes to try out at home..
Throughout the workshop, key markers of design thinking - curiosity, empathy, experimentation, process-orientation, radical collaboration - are interwoven. The workshop is learning about the design thinking approach by doing it yourself.

Standing in good health can be understood as smooth functioning in areas such as physical and mental health, maybe also emotional and relational health. Smooth also meaning that everyone will face certain conditions and bounce back differently - depending on resilience and other factors.
In this small-sized kick-off workshop, we will utilize systemic therapy combined with design thinking and doing to grasp the concept of “health” better. This means that we will look beyond the individual and include the role of family and context. We will borrow from the toolkit of open-minded creatives for playful problem solving. Without much lecturing, the focus is on embodied experimentation and the goal is to create a few actionable outcomes. Sound intriguing, right?
The rope method is a wonderful tool for externalizing your path from past to present with enough give to your future destination in terms of health.
Scenario planning and sketching is great for visualizing the most likely, dominant expected future, yet also other possible journeys.
And design thinking’s key markers - curiosity, empathy, experimentation, process-orientation, radical collaboration - will be interwoven into the workshop experience.

You have an idea, but you don’t dare to share it. You want to start your own business, but that’s too risky. You long to make a career move, but talk yourself out of it. You want more time for yourself, but that's impossible.
What if one day of exploration took you safely from a hushed MAYBE to a resolute YES to starting your new project?
Acknowledge your inner whisper. It matters so make the time now to explore it. Give it full attention.
This is an opportunity to take a step towards what it is you really want. We are putting together a fabulous group of people with ideas - like you - who are ready to face their dreams. We will lead with experiential, creative exercises to help you work through your fears and move you towards an actionable plan. You will also walk away with survival skills to help you along the way.

Pixel Story Studio is all about fusing design methods with systemic positive psychology to make us stronger.
In this workshop for the young and the old, we will craft an oversized chart out of wood, nails, and some hit and miss hammering. Then we will add paint, labeling and stretchy ropes and we are all set to discuss our journey mapping canvas.
While crafting the maps, we will talk and ask and listen. The focus is just as much on the artifact - the map - as it is on learning how to build awareness for the highs and lows in our days, correlations with events, and our power to steer the course. There is room to navigate your days more mindfully.
Join us for an experimental journey mapping event!
For ages 6+ and all the way up. Parents are welcome, too. Seats are limited and available at 40 Euro per person, including materials & refreshments. Instruction in English yet Dutchies welcome as we all will help out. Email info@pixelstorystudio.com to save your spot.

In this first workshop for children, we will craft full- or half-face gipsum masks and help one another taking this very personal picture. Already, children will build trust with one another during this step.
While crafting the masks, we will talk and ask and listen. The focus is just as much on the artefact - the mask - as it is on learning a new skill as well as about ourselves.

In this two-hour workshop (or lab) you will develop a roadmap to your future self.
Hopscotch Labs will introduce design thinking and future forecasting methods to help you take control of your future. We will use Narrative Therapy and Body Storming methods to give us a sense of our potential futures. As we work, we will uncover challenges, needed skillsets, and a future more resilliant self. You will leave this workshop with key milestones, and decisions that you need to pay attention to—your very own master plan.

Time is too precious to just let life happen. Just as you plan an event you can design the life you want, one that recharges you with every action you take.
In this two-hour workshop (or lab) you will chart your life to develop a foundation for personal development. In a team effort we will identify trends, label ‘eras’ and work to describe what characterizes the things that get you jazzed. San Diego Startup Week 2016:
The Hopscotch Labs team led a multi-discipline group in exercises designed to elicit empathy and curiosity about specific user groups.
When was the last time you got a call while leaving the house, or parking the car? Did you have children with you? A couple of toys, a bag, a stroller? Were the kids screaming at each other? Refusing to put on their shoes? Did you also have low blood sugar and have to use the bathroom?
Your product doesn't exist in a vacuum. It gets used in the context of everyday life. Learn how to use context to derive product ideas or features and functions.
Start from a place of real user need to ...
align your product team,
prioritize development decisions,
make your product sticky, and
find market success.
This human-centered lab will focus on field research techniques to understand urban experiences from a female and family perspective. We'll start from a hypothesis; head out into the wilds of downtown San Diego to practice field research methods; before coming back to brainstorm solutions for these specific target audiences.
What is a woman's experience in the urban jungle?
How does one child or multiple children affect a simple trip to the mall?
How does the environment support or hinder desired or necessary activities?
You'll need:
a smart phone or camera to capture pictures
a notebook and pen
sunscreen, sunglasses and layers
Design based on real customer needs and motivations.
In this intensive, 1-day workshop you will learn from Hopscotch Labs' experts—experts versed in helping companies leverage human experiences to build better products and services for over 15 years.
We will use human-centered research to diagnose the unique problems faced by your clients' customers. You will get hands on experience developing customer insights that lead directly to design development. Ending the day with conceptualized solutions that directly solve the problem you identified.
Afterwards, you’ll have the ability to guide the creation of products and services that your customers will love. Most of all you’ll have new skills to lead your organization.
